EMDR Therapy: What Therapists Use For Bilateral Stimulation

Ever wonder how EMDR works? Here are four methods EMDR therapists use to stimulate bilateral stimulation, a technique that activates left and right eye movement to regulate and process past troubling experiences:

  1. Virtual EMDR: Utilizing an online program or software selected by your EMDR therapist. You'll receive login credentials to access this from your computer. Your therapist controls the speed and duration of ball movement on the screen while you participate from the comfort of your home. This is typically included in your session at no additional cost.

  2. Lightbar Machine: This device features a moving light controlled by your EMDR therapist. It's commonly found in the therapist's office and used during in-person sessions.

  3. Butterfly Hug: As a client, you can cross your thumbs to form a butterfly shape and position your hands so that the tips of your middle fingers are just below your collarbone. This self-administered bilateral stimulation technique is taught by your EMDR therapist, who guides you on speed adjustments for calming, processing distressing events, or reinforcing positive beliefs.

  4. Buzzers or Tappers: These handheld devices are used during in-person sessions. Your EMDR therapist adjusts the speed and intensity of the bilateral stimulation while you hold a buzzer in each hand.

EMDR can be administered by clinicians who have completed basic training. Certified EMDR therapists are licensed clinicians who have undergone additional EMDR training, supervision, and approval by the EMDR International Association.
